11. Sounds of Success CD
Featured Interview: Featured Interview: The Way of the Mile High Maverick with Stephen Oliver, Part 1

Few martial arts professionals have created a more comprehensive entrepreneurial persona within the industry than Stephen Oliver, owner of Mile High Karate schools throughout the Denver area, founder of Extraordinary Marketing and developer of NAPMA Squared.

As an Eighth-Degree Black Belt and a multiple-school owner with double MBAs, Mr. Oliver is a prime example of a martial arts professional who has learned to combine tradition with innovation—and generate generous amounts of success for students, his staff, his business associates and himself.

Although they have been long-time collaborators, NAPMA President Rob Colasanti is always eager to explore new regions of Stephen Oliver’s experience, perspectives and ideas. They were fortunate (and so are you) that they found time, during Mr. Oliver’s constant travel and the development of his latest entrepreneurial opportunities, to discuss many topics that will interest you and jump-start your thinking and success.

During this lengthy interview, they discuss many of the strategies and tactics that too many school owners overlook and, if applied correctly, would result in dramatic growth, improved retention and burgeoning revenues.

A comprehensive system is often what too many schools lack, says Mr. Oliver. That may be the primary change that is necessary to increase success, dramatically. Understanding student value is often the starting point. From there, a school owner is able to select the correct tuition and billing system; develop upgrade programs and the right staff; and find the solutions to retention problems.

Mr. Oliver also discusses the value of his coaching programs and those offered throughout the industry; the growing trend toward franchising; and the future of NAPMA Squared.

Regardless of what you think or heard, when Stephen Oliver talks, many instructors and school owners listen—and learn—and you would be doing yourself a disservice if you failed to learn from someone who has experienced and profited from the martial arts industry as much as Mr. Oliver. Look for part 2 of this great interview in the January 2007 Professional Package.
