Featured Interview: "Echo of Greatness," Part 2, with Joe Lewis

Many NAPMA members agree that part 1 of this exclusive interview with the legendary Joe Lewis was filled with excellent content, but we're confident you'll find part 2 even better. Mr. Lewis continues his deep thinking on philosophical topics and human issues that prove great brawn and a great brain do come in one package.

“ Heart is your commitment to execute with eagerness and your willingness to remain engaged. This is created and maintained by the energy of your inner passion.”
Throughout part 2, Mr. Lewis and NAPMA President Rob Colasanti discuss such topics as spirituality, fear and his mantra for martial artists who want to become more technically proficient: commitment, conviction and convince. He also provides his definition of confidence, which is beautifully worded and filled with many ideas to consider.
“ My definition of confidence is your ability to demonstrate your skills with absolute certainty, while being able to maintain not only eagerness, but also a willingness to remain engaged in the face of any adversity and against overwhelming odds.” This interview also reveals Mr. Lewis' uncanny ability to read body language, what he calls the language of emotions. He considers this one of his greatest fighting skills, although that “fight” occurred completely in his mind.

“ Insecure fighters always try to hide, to make themselves invisible, to project an embellished demeanor. A confident fighter simply observes. There's no posturing, there's no embellishing, nothing.”
Mr. Lewis explains that his greatest weapon was not his fighting skills, but his will. He says no one could equal it, and his record and reputation proves it. Listening to Joe Lewis, is living, if only vicariously, his amazing life and story. It’s a lesson for every martial arts student of where the arts can take you.
